disorder and the treatment options for it. State of the Art The practice of stuttering therapy "continues "to be of great concern in the field fo speech language pathology. Despite decades of research and clinical practice, stuttering is still treated by ineffective and inefficient means" (Saltuklaroglu and Kalinowski, 2002, p. 786). Treatment modalities include "behavioral, psychotherapeutic and speech motor paradigms" but stuttering still "defines understanding" and even worse, "regardless of the approach taken, shows a pervasive resistance to treatment" (Saltuklaroglu and Kalinowski, 2002, p. 786). Treatments may induce "illusory short term relief from the disorder" but most sufferers rarely enjoy long-term improvement, "often generating feelings of helplessness towards stuttering and a general loss of confidence in therapy and themselves" (Saltuklaroglu and Kalinowski, 2002, p. 786). Some of the problems associated with treating stuttering include the fact that when a person is not speaking, there is no evidence of the condition; and even when he is speaking, "stuttering is not continuously present" (Saltuklaroglu and Kalinowski, 2002, p. 786). Even in severe cases "stuttering is intermittent, rarely apparent on every word or syllable" (Saltuklaroglu and Kalinowski, 2002, p. 786). There are, in addition, "countless" reasons for stuttering, which vary with every individual, again complicating treatment and the success of that treatment (Saltuklaroglu and Kalinowski, 2002, p. 786). Stuttering in Children The disorder appears to be related to the way in which children learn to form words. The process is complex, "and yet most young children seem to acquire words effortlessly" (Hall, 2004, p. 57).
