over the years, so has crime and the methods used to detect and prevent it. Often, technological advances spur fundamental changes in law enforcement and justice, as criminals and law
enforcement officials are in a constant race to gain an advantage over one another. In recent years, the relatively wide spread access to high technology has forced law enforcement agencies
to adopt new technological standards in an effort to keep up. However, there are some who claim that these technological advancements have been adopted without due consideration for their impact
on innocent civilians. In particular, the use of stun guns and patrol car surveillance systems by police agencies have provoked accusations of legal and ethical breaches by many concerned citizens.
This paragraph will help the student to explore the use of stun guns in law enforcement. One of the most controversial topics in law enforcement over the last decade has
been the use of stun guns, also known as tazers. These devices are handheld units that use compressed gas to fire small barbed electrodes into a targets skin, and then
send an electrical current passing through their body. This has the effect of subduing even the most forceful and aggressive offenders while leaving the officer at minimal risk. However, as
the use of such devices has become more routine, there have been criticisms of their usage in certain contexts. For example, when police arrest someone on the street, they typically
have little idea about the persons physical health or background. Unfortunately, this can lead to fatal incidents, when stun guns are used on individuals with "existing or potential health problems"
