The use of stun guns and video surveillance technology has become increasingly widespread among law enforcement officers. However, this trend is controversial due to the possibility for harm due to stun gun use and the perception that video surveillance constitutes an invasion of privacy. However, consideration of the pros and cons of associated with this technology indicates that in both cases, their use, though not without drawbacks, is warranted and justifiable. Stun guns, such as the TASER X-25, deliver low-current, high-voltage electrical current to the body of the offender, which causes neuro-muscular incapacitation (Lakkireddy, et al, 2008). As of 2008, roughly 11,000 police departments throughout the US reported the use of stun guns and this use was associated with close to 160 in-custody deaths (Lakkireddy, et al, 2008). An animal study, using adult pigs, conducted by Lakkireddy, et al (2008) investigated the potential of stun gun discharge to initiate cardiac ventricular fibrillation (VF) with two-tethered barbs situated at five specific locations. Discharges were administered in a progressive fashion that was geared to match the waveform of commercially available stun guns, specifically the TASER X-26 and the TASER International. In this study, there was no evidence of myocardial damage after any of the discharges (Lakkireddy, et al, 2008). There are instances where the use of stun guns is detrimental.
