dangerous neighborhoods and avoid trouble. Yet, someone can come from a rather dangerous neighborhood and avoid conflict, but it seems that it is difficult to do if one is either
Latino or African American. The expression "driving while black" would surface not too long ago because it is presumed that police officers racially profile and will follow African Americans more
often than the general populous. The well known Amadou Diallo case some years ago saw the immigrant riddled with bullets. While he was trying to get his wallet out of
his pants, police presumed he had a gun and shot him 41 times. The police officers lived mostly in white Suburbia and they were in what they considered to be
a dangerous neighborhood at the time they killed Diallo. Prison statistics notoriously point out that more African Americans and Latinos sit in prison cells. Some argue that those in
the minority simply commit more crime, but the truth may really be that they are simply arrested more often. If young Hispanic and African American men are followed more frequently,
it is more likely that suspicions will turn into arrests. With institutional racism a problem, it is then more likely that those arrests will lead to indictments, trials and prison
sentences. Police officers notoriously have big egos and if their initial inquiry does not necessarily lead to something indictable, they may think of another reason for the arrest. More
African American and Latino men between the ages of 15 and 40 are in prisons is because police officers arrest them more frequently due to their race and age. The
stereotype that young minority men are dangerous persists. In exploring the thesis, a student should keep in mind that the variables are in fact race, gender and age. Many questions
