as the obvious approval in the way that Sophocles portrays the pity that the shepherd showed toward the infant Oedipus that he found with its ankles pierced, abandoned on the
mountain. Also, Jocastas grief, even decades later, is clearly evident when she tells Oedipus that her son by Laius was only three days old, when, "...by other hands, he cast
him forth/Maiming his ankles, on a lonely hill" (lines 744-746). Giving such details would be unnecessary if Jocasta did not still feel pain at this memory. On the other
hand, the theme of violence can also be easily pursued as Sophocles makes it clear from the beginning of the play that the murder of Laius by Oedipus was wrong
because it is this un-revenged death that has earned the anger of Apollo and brought plague upon the city. The city suffers precisely because this was a wrongful death and
it is Oedipus himself who pronounces judgment on the murderer, saying that "doom" and exile will become the murders fate (lines 278-287). In preparing for writing on this topic,
