Summary: The main ideas of their article are that distance education has been successful, and is appropriate, especially in areas where there arent enough qualified teachers to teach special subjects, such as foreign languages. The main section describes the methods they used for their survey, and the outcome; they had a huge response rate (95%) and found that educators were pleased with distance education. The authors purpose is to inform the reader as to the place of distance education in the curriculum; in the larger context, they are arguing for its inclusion in the curriculum in the American school system in general. Two points these authors make are that distance education is especially useful to rural schools because of geographical isolation; another point is that it works just as well or better as traditional education. The main point is that the vast majority of schools that use distance education are either very satisfied or satisfied with it. Two ideas from the piece that strike home are that there are not enough teachers to go around, and that distance education should be encouraged. The audience that would agree with the main point is probably teachers and administrators; a comparison of two ideas suggests that money is at the heart of much of the difficulty, both because teachers arent paid enough to teach in the country, and also because poor schools cannot afford the technology for distance education; this compares to the success rates of those who do have distance education, and suggest that its worth trying to make available to all students.
