visual impairment (B/VI) have a tremendous negative effect on child development, as it greatly impacts language development, as well as the development of gross and fine motor skills. In order to serve the needs of B/VI students, teachers need to be thoroughly familiar with this disability and the instructional strategies that can be used to address their needs. Epidemiology Razavi and his colleagues (2010) identify five principal categories associated with B/VI, which are intrauterine, hereditary, perinatal/neonatal, post-natal/infancy/childhood and unknown. In the Razavi, et al (2010 study, children with a family history of blindness were more likely to have a hereditary etiology; however, cases in which B/VI was due to preventable causes, such as inoculation against the rubella virus, were also encounter encountered. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the leading causes of B/VI are cataract; refractive errors that have not been correct, i.e., being near-sighted or far-sighted; cataract, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration (Hindley and Salt, 2007). In the developed world, the leading cause of visual impairment in children is cerebral visual impairment (CVI), which is a term that refers to damage to the occipital cortex (Macintyre-Beon, et al, 2012). CVI results from any injury that causes damage to the visual cortex, and is associated with a variety of different symptoms, depending on the underlying injury (Macintyre-Beon, et al, 2012). Characteristics It has been that the developmental delays that are associated with VI are often due to the environmental or condition-specific variables that are associated with VI, rather than the condition itself (Hindley and Salt, 2007).
