The Recruitment and Retention of African American A 5 page discussion of the disproportionate representation of blacks and whites in the nation's gifted educational programs. Outlines advancements such as the 1988 Jacob K. Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education Act which promotes African American participation in these programs and the recognition of the U.S. Department of Education in its 1993 definition of giftedness that children should be judged as excelling in comparison to other children of their age, experience, or environment. Concludes, however, that the statistics concerning the disproportionate participation between blacks and whites in gifted programs are still indicative of a problem. Bibliography lists 15 sources.
