gain an education and think little of how such immigration regulations affect them. But, the truth is that students are powerfully affected by immigration policies. There are numerous policies
which allow immigrants to become educated in this country and as such may well be policies that damage the education that American citizens receive. While this may or may not
be the case, it is a possibility which indicates that college and university students should care about immigration policies. And, in light of recent events, those of September, 2001, immigration
policies clearly affect everyone and should therefore be a concern of everyone. In the following paper we examine some of the immigration policies as they pertain to education, presenting information
which will enable the student to understand that immigration policies affect them and that they should, as a result of this, be concerned with immigration policies. U.S. Immigration
Laws and Students For many decades the United States has maintained many immigration policies which involve the educational institution of this country. In the past decade or so there have
been numerous efforts to allow particular cultures access to our education system. For example, "On October 9, 1992, the President signed into law S. 1216, the Chinese Student Protection Act
of 1992....The new law will permit the Chinese nationals who were beneficiaries of the executive order to adjust their status" (Anonymous President signs into law legislation to fund INS and
bill to protect Chinese students, 1992; p. 40). This law was to affect "Approximately 80,000 Chinese, mostly students," who "will benefit from this legislation. The applicants will have to show
