Largely, they are there simply for the degree as it is well known that it is difficult to get any job today without one. On the other hand, that is not a good attitude. In fact, Combs and Canfield remark: "The most dangerous way to approach college is with the idea that all you need to do is pay your dues and get your degree" (xiii). By taking this mental route, a student will likely not do well in the world of work. The best thing to do is to approach college from a career perspective. Then, a major should be selected with the career goal in mind. After that, the college graduate should pursue a job in their field of study. If they do not, they will not likely do well financially and to an extent, the degree will have been a waste of time. College degrees cost money. On some level, they are part of a business investment that is designed to end in a career. By putting money into a certain degree such as accounting, the graduate will have invested money into an accounting career. If the student graduates and decides that he or she would rather groom dogs, for example, the degree will have been very costly and the that individuals future earnings will have been greatly reduced. While there are many who say that people should follow their bliss, leaving a lucrative profession to do something frivolous is not sound. In the end, the individual will probably regret the choice.
