education and thus the majority of students remain in their institution. However, the truth is that retention in higher education institutions is a very serious concern. It is, also, not something that only applies to minorities but to all ranges of students. The following paper examines how this is a real and serious problem and then discusses ways in which it could be remedied. Student Retention in Higher Education One author notes how "Keeping students enrolled is one of the top challenges of higher education" (Markley). In relationship to just one institution, Missouri State, it is noted that they are retaining 74% of their students in going from the first year to the second year and that they only have a 52% rate of graduation. The president of the school states, "We would like to do significantly better than that and we believe we have students whose academic capabilities will make them successful as we become more aggressive with respect to these numbers" (Hoff). He hopes to raise the numbers from 74% to 80% and then from 52% to 60% in relationship to a six year graduation plan (Hoff). In truth the numbers involving retention are similar across the nation and this can clearly not be summed up to minorities or to any particular region of the nation. In relationship to what can be done about this problem there are understandably many approaches that could be taken, and perhaps those approaches would differ for different institutions who focus on different learning environments. One approach is offered by Hobsons: "Hobsons, a company that helps colleges and universities elevate their enrollment strategies, recognizes that student retention is a problem and has developed a comprehensive solution designed to identify, engage, assess, and coach students through to graduation" (Markley).
