When one enters the field of professional assessment, one is bound to learn things from students that no one else may know; maintaining a strong element of trust, confidentiality and impartiality is essential to upholding the code of ethics assessors must support. In order for the industry to maintain its integrity, so too must each individual member; that is why a distinct set of guidelines exist under the category of Adherence to Professional Standards on Assessment. Being qualified to perform student assessments is an important factor that some evaluators overlook; when this happens, the assessor can enter into a situation that he or she is not trained to handle. Most anyone can obtain the necessary schooling that deems him or her as a qualified assessor; however, unless the individual follows established and recognized professional ethics, students are in danger of placing their fragile lives in the wrong hands. Understanding the limits as they relate to competency is very important in determining just what a particular assessor is capable of achieving within the realm of industry standards.
