THE HISTORY OF THE BOYS SCOUTS OF AMERICA At the turn of the 20th century, a British Army officer named Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell discovered that his men did not
know basic first aid or who to survive in the outdoors (BSA, 2006). To assist his men, he put together a small handbook called Aids to Scouting (BSA, 2006).
At about the same time, Scouting was beginning to appear in the United States. In Connecticut, Ernest Thompson Seton was organizing a group of boys which were known as the
Woodcraft Indians (BSA, 2006). At the same time, Daniel Carter Beard was organizing the Sons of Daniel Boone (BSA, 2006). These two organizations were very similar, but not
connected at that time. Although at the time, neither organization had ever heard of Baden-Powell, yet all were to become Boy Scouts (BSA, 2006). On February 8, 1920, The
Boy Scout of American was incorporated and Baden Powell came to America to talk to the original leaders of the organization (BSA, 2006). That same year, President Taft became the
first honorary president of the BSA and Theodore Roosevelt became the first honorary vice-president (BSA, 2006). The Boy Scouts of America is a charter organization of the United States. As
such, every unit or troop or post is owned by the chartered organization and each is subject to the policies and procedure of the national organization. The organization is funded
