on the belief that structure; inequality in a society is about competing power groups. This places the topic of structural inequality under the umbrella of conflict theory wherein stratification is
described as "the struggle between groups" (Rubenstein, 2001, p. 41). The history of structural inequality is long in the United States, just as it is in most nations (Gundi, 2002).
It can be traced in race, ethnicities, nationalities, gender, age and in just about any other demographic but it can be summed up as social class segregation or stratification.
Racism has existed since the founding of this nation (Gundi, 2002). This author says that racism subverts "social unity" (Gundi, 2002). It is something that is not thought about nor
is it talked about very much these days. Gundi (2002) explained that racial prejudice "has developed over time without cognizance" (p. 2). It is something that is intrinsic in the
entire socioeconomic system (Gundi, 2002). Different laws and court rulings have addressed the issue of racism but in some cases, they left different races worse off. In the very famous
Plessy vs. Ferguson case in 1896, the court ruled that "separate but equal" was fine, it was okay to have separate schools for whites and blacks as long as the
schools were equal in quality (Gundi, 2002). This court ruling perpetuated the notion that whites were still more important and more deserving of a quality education than were blacks. The
