retirement at the age of one hundred in January 2003, Strom Thurmond claimed the title as being the oldest individual to have ever served in the U.S. Senate. Thurmonds
political record, however, far exceeds the notability bestowed on him because of his age. Thurmonds political accomplishments were many and related in many cases as much to his indirect
support of issues and candidates direct actions in office. Thurmonds support of Gerald Carter in the 1976 presidential election was one on those indirect accomplishments.
Thurmond served a total of forty-eight years in the Senate and held the record as the only write-in candidate to ever win a Senate seat (Newsday, 2001).
His political career as a whole, however, extends back to his 1929 post as Edgefield County North Carolinas superintendent of education. During his long career Thurmond racked up a
number of accomplishments. His name also became associated with a number of political improprieties. Glover (1998) describes Thurmond as a blend between Jesse Ventura and George Nethercutt.
Glover (1998, 37) details that Thurmond pulled himself from the meager status of a school teacher:
"to presidential maverick... His penchant for bucking established norms first surfaced when he decided to enter the political arena in 1928..."
Born in 1903, the year the Wright Brothers had their first infamous flight, Thurmond began his fight for his first political office in
1928 at the age of twenty-five. That year he fought for a relatively minor political position, the post of county school superintendent. His aspirations would only grow, however.
