depending on the location and nature of the blood supply deficit (Harvey, 2004). Symptoms can range from the patient being in a deep coma to mild deficits affecting one side
of the (Harvey, 2004). Assessment begins with an evaluation of breathing and circulation and includes the patients vital signs (Finley, 2004). According to Finley (2004), all patients who have a
temperature greater than 99 degrees Fahrenheit should immediately receive 1g of acetaminophen. This is because an increased temperature can result in increased cerebral metabolism, which can increase cerebral bleeding (Finley,
2004). Also at this time, the nurse should assess the patients fluid and volume status as individuals who are hypovolemic or dehydrated may have decreased cerebral blood flow and perfusion,
which can cause cerebral ischemia (Finley, 2004). The administration of isotonic intravenous fluids at this time can aid in increasing cerebral infusion, but this should be carefully monitored (Finley, 2004).
If the right cerebral hemisphere is affected, the patient will show weakness on the left-hand side of the body and vice versa for the left cerebral hemisphere (Harvey, 2004).
The patients face will be asymmetrical and will experience a loss of visual field that varies with the part of the brain that is affected. If the patients brainstem and
cerebellum are affected, then hemi/quadriparesis, hemisensory loss and ataxia, and abnormal eye movements will be noted, along with possible nausea, vomiting, hiccups, vertigo, tennitus, and abnormal respiration (Harvey, 2004). If
the thalamic area is affected this can result in sensory alterations in response to touch, pain, vibration and temperature (Harvey, 2004). Kvigne and Kirkevold (2002) point out that stroke
not only strikes a great number of elderly women, but that this population seemed to be harder hit by stroke than are men. In general, elderly women achieve lower scores
