the way employees are motivated as well as their general well beings. Employers also have a duty of care to look after employees and take reasonable steps to protect their
health. Therefore we can argue that stress may be a problem for the employee but it is also a problem for the employer, causing poor health for the employee which
will also impact on productivity levels and the health of the employee. However, it is also difficult to tell which employees will suffer from stress and those who will survive
it or even thrive when working in stressful condition, as such this is also the employees problem. In a recent survey in the UK, undertaken by the TUC1 it
was found that 58% of employees suffer from stress due to work. This in increasing as the 2002 figure was 2% less (Printing World, 2004). The increase is attributed to
increasing workloads, longer hours, lower staff levels and cost cutting. These are all elements of the employment environment. However, there are also situation where the cause of employee stress
is not the work environment, but there is still an impact for the employer. It is known that events such as moving, divorce and even marriage are stressful, but these
are suffered by individuals, and a caring employer can usually help. The situation becomes more complex where there are external pressures that create broader levels of stress, such as those
seen in the US following hurricanes. The employees are stressed not by the immediate damage, but by their mixed loyalties, needing to get their homes sorted out as well as
support their workplace, the higher the loyalty levels the greater the internal conflict (Freeman, 2004). Where this occurs there can be a difficult position for the employee, and in seeking
