ABOUT EMERGENCY MEDICAL PERSONNEL EMT-Basic training consists of one hundred ten to one hundred twenty classroom hours and ten hands-on hours in an actual emergency room, which is considered the absolute minimal amount of time one can invest. The aspects of emergency medical training received at this level includes addressing such situations as bleeding, airway obstruction, fractures, emergency childbirth and cardiac arrest. Requirements for EMT-Intermediate training are determined by each individual state, usually consisting of thirty-five to fifty-five extra instructional hours over and above the basic training, which serve to educate students on more complex equipment and fluid administration. However, having successfully passed the EMT-Basic training is not the only qualification for moving up to the intermediate level; rather, the individual must also have completed necessary classroom time and spent a certain period of time in the field. Those who do complete the intermediate level typically move on to the third and final level of EMT-Paramedic. The time requirement for this particular certification is anywhere from seventy-five to two thousand hours, which often proves quite laborious; inasmuch as this level demands the utmost in training, it is most often ranked as a paid position. Even -- and especially -- at the highest level, all EMTs are to take periodic refresher courses to maintain both their knowledge and the ever-changing techniques. Certification is only renewed at two-year intervals. Much attention is paid to an applicants state of mind when vying for a position as an EMT.
