stress is experienced by 25 to 40 percent of all American workers (Homisak, 2003). Furthermore, it is estimated that $300 billion (roughly $7,500 per employee) is spent each year
in the US on stress-related compensation claims, reduced productivity, absenteeism, health insurance, direct medical claims, and employee turnover (Homisak, 2003). As these figures suggest, stress seriously impacts American health, as
well as the economy. The following examination of stress, first of all, defines what is meant by "stress," and what factors contribute to the perception of stress as experienced by
the individual, such as cultural differences, personality traits, and social factors such as working environment and personal relationships. Then, a closer look is offered at the fact that stress can
have both positive and negative effects. Various types of stressors -- what constitutes stress? According to Websters Dictionary, "stress" is a "factor causing mental strain or tension; the
physical and mental state resulting from such strain" (Gamse, 2003, p. 101). As this indicates, while stress is perceived as mental tension, it can have very real ramifications for the
body. Basically, stress causes the body to react as it were under attack. Hormones cascade into the bloodstream, blood pressure increases, and the body gears up for self-protection. However, when
