has become so fast-paced, there never seems to be time to just do nothing. As the marketplace has become global, stress on the job has become more of an epidemic. Mergers, acquisitions, restructuring, and creating the lean company have all had a very dramatic toll on todays worker. Walonick comments that it very difficult to define stress because it is an imprecise term (n.d.). Instead, stress is usually defined as symptoms. For example, McGrath suggested that when external situations seems to place demands on a person that exceeds the persons capabilities and resources, the individual feels stress (Walonick, n.d.). Williams and Huber defined stress as being an adaptive response to external conditions present a threat (Walonick, n.d.). Hans Selye, one of the most famous names in the field of stress, defined stress as: "essentially the rate of all wear and tear caused by life" (Buhler, 1999, p. 14). Selye also explained that not all stress was the same. There is eustress, which is positive (Buhler, 1999). Positive stress acts as a catalyst for an individual to perform at a higher level (Buhler, 1999). Eustress does not impact health negatively (Buhler, 1999). There is also distress, which is negative and which damages ones physical and psychological health (Buhler, 1999). The body goes through stages when a person feels stress beginning with a faster heartbeat, slower digestive function, higher blood pressure and irregular breathing patterns (Walonick, n.d.). As the stress continues, the body tends to build up a tolerance to the ill-effects but that soon evolves into a stage of exhaustion at which time, the body has no more adaptive energy (Walonick, n.d.).
