"everyone" knows that the vitamins and minerals contained in the food they eat provide the building blocks for all of the various types of molecules used in food metabolism body processes, and that carbohydrates provide the energy that drives those processes. The body is not overly demanding to the point that it overtly will refuse to function. Rather, it functions at an ever-decreasing level of efficiency when it does not receive what it needs to function at optimal levels. Stress can cause some of the same effects, as well as causing others unique to it. Combined, poor nutrition and stress can work together to create a wealth of problems for the individual unwilling to address either condition. Stress and Nutrition Stress results in an acceleration of many processes: heart rate increases, blood vessels can constrict to increase the individuals flow of blood. This increases blood pressure, of course, placing additional physical stress on the blood vessels themselves. This is the mechanism by which the "fight or flight" response operates, placing the body on alert that it may be called on to do one or the other very shortly. In this heightened state of awareness and physical alertness, physiological processes speed up as well. The body uses more of the building blocks of processes and compounds in this state that it does when the body - and the mind - are in a relaxed state. Stress is particularly greedy for B vitamins, "which affect the nervous system, and calcium, which is needed to counteract the lactic acid your tense muscles produce.
