Avoiding stress is not an option in todays global society, which means management techniques are the only effective way to address it. The workplace is one environment where a significant number of stressors exist all at the same time; not only does this impact job performance but it also transfers to home and personal lives. Companies have come to realize the detrimental impact of work-related stress and many implement stress management plans to combat it. Negative stress is the kind that wears down a persons ability to cope with even the most routine tasks (Williams, 2009). An individual who is at the end of his or her rope develops a skewed perception of reality and often begins to misconstrue things. While this negative stress may have initially started out as positive pressure, as in the case of a new job, the impact it carries with it as it mutates into a negative presence can have grave consequences upon ones physical and emotional being. People must learn how to harness that negative stress and turn it into a more beneficial element or get rid of it altogether.
