by the bacterium, and changing views of them throughout history. This bacterium causes the "strep throat" that is familiar to most people, but it also causes much more serious conditions
including scarlet fever, necrotizing fasciitis and toxic shock. The paper also discusses the signs and symptoms of the disease in some detail, and briefly touches on the population groups affected
by streptococcus pyogenes. Finally, it discusses the means used to diagnose the disease, the available treatments, and how the disease may be prevented. Introduction Streptococcus pyogenes is the
scientific proper name for the bacillus we commonly identify as being the cause of "strep throat." The genus Streptococcus "is comprised of Gram-positive, microaerophilic cocci (round), which are not motile
and occur in chains or pairs. The genus is defined by a combination of antigenic, hemolytic, and physiological characteristics into Groups A, B, C, D, F, and G. Groups A
and D can be transmitted to humans via food" (Streptococcus - information from CDC). The most common group is Group A streptococcus, abbreviated "GAS" (Streptococcus). It is the cause of
several diseases, most of which are mild (impetigo, strep throat) but it can on occasion cause "severe and even life-threatening diseases" (Streptococcus-information from CDC). Group B streptococcus ("GBS") is "a
type of bacterium that causes illness in newborn babies, pregnant women, the elderly, and adults with other illnesses, such as diabetes or liver disease. GBS is the most common cause
of life-threatening infections in newborns" (Streptococcus-information from CDC). History The streptococci micro-organisms "represent a large group of bacteria which were first identified by Christian Albert Theodor Billroth in 1874 and
classified into an alphabetical sequence by the American bacteriologist Rebecca Craighill Lancefield in 1933" (Williams, 2004). Group A streptococci "are called pyogenes"; the term means "pus-forming and relates to the
