Systems thinking is based on the concept of looking at problems as part of a larger system with a focus on the way relationships take place, Within this model the bank contact enter will be a complex system, made up of many different parts that al interact, there may be different departments, there are also differing sub systems, that may be both human and non human. The application of systems thinking is to perceive the problem in the context of the system as a whole. In practical terms it is a framework for an holistic approach top problem solving that means the problem causes and the potential solution are not viewed in isolation. For example, in a bank contact center, if there are queues of customers on the telephones it would be natural to try and postpone staff breaks until the back log is cleared. This would be short term focused problem thinking. However, there may also be other issues with this, delaying the breaks of some employees may result in stress being placed ion the staff canteen when eventually the staff do get a break, which may cause further delays as well as impact on the mood of the employees answering the telephones. If delaying breaks were done on a regular basis there may also be potential motivational issues. Therefore system thinking allows the small decision to be placed into a larger context, in order to assess the potential ongoing impact, and assess potential unintended impacts as well as the intended impacts.
