the same color as the gangs wear. Many elements of gang activity enter the mainstream and they are well known. Crime families are well known too. The Godfather film series
characterized Italian organized crime in America, but it also brought it to the forefront. More recently, The Sopranos created a paradigm where these mob families were viewed as
real families as opposed to people who lived in another world. Indeed, the Sopranos depicted a suburban mob family with a variety of problems and therapist in tow. Things changed
throughout the course of the twentieth century. Towards the end of the century, many well known mob bosses were arrested. Yet, while the Mafia lives on, and gangs continue to
erupt, organized crime in America is changing. Todays organized crime families are different than in the past. Historically, criminologists would examine La Cosa Nostra or the Italian Mafia, but today,
organized criminal activity goes well beyond these crime families. While they still exist, they are in good company with Asian and Russian organizations entering the fray. First, it should be
said that Asian gangs have become quite apparent in modern America. They seem to traffic in illegal goods and practices such as heroin, prostitution, and gambling (Bolz, 1995). They also
engage in money laundering schemes (Bolz, 1995). This latter focus is the crux of many crime organizations because they have to cover their tracks and make it appear as if
everything they are doing is legal. Hence, money laundering appears to be universal. Money laundering is also considered to be key to the Russian Mafias operations (Paddock, 1998). Wilson claims
that there are in fact reports that the Russian Mafia is far ahead of its well known Italian counterpart in terms of size and sophistication (Wilson, 1997). The Russians rely
