the gang is not clear. Suddenly, it seems, gangs are present in society, but the gang of older decades saw youth rumble and fight fist to fist. Today, gang members use semi-automatic weapons. At the very least, guns are used. This was not the case in the past where knives were usually the weapon of choice. Things have changed, but the basis of the psychology of gang membership and juvenile delinquency is largely the same. It appears that gang violence has kept pace with an increasingly violent larger society. There is also something to be said about the relationship between youth gangs and juvenile delinquency. While gangs are a part and parcel of the culture today, the concept of juvenile delinquency is rather evasive. Many do not dub children "juvenile delinquents" anymore. The terminology is still used, but it is somewhat pass?. At the same time, courts may charge teenagers with the crime of delinquency. This is done because the catchall term juvenile delinquency is used so that youth are not charged with serious adult crimes (Siegel, Welsh & Senna, 2005). The idea to call a young criminal a " delinquent" makes some sense. At this early stage, these misguided youth are not career criminals. While the label does have a negative connotation, it is not the same as calling someone a murderer or a thief. The label of juvenile delinquent suggests that a teenager is getting into trouble and needs to be shown the correct ways of living. Also, juveniles are in an experimentation phase. There is room for change. Studies conducted in the 1970s show that juvenile offenders rarely specialized in any one type of crime (Feld, 2000 in Fagin & Zimring, 2000).
