the mind wanders through thoughts in an attempt to come to a place where the importance of the moment is revealed. The stream of consciousness style of writing
is a logical device for the modern writer and is a basic component of postmodern expressionism. It allows the portrayal of unfamiliar images of the world through both the
logic and distortion that the mind utilizes in the process of interpretation and integration of information. It also filters experience through a lens of emotional interaction with the thoughts
and memories of the individual. Stream of consciousness has also been referred to as the interior monologue because the nature of the dialogue is between the person and
their alter ego, or the subconscious. It allows the reader to be party to the speculation, responses and memories that are brought about through a certain stimulation.
For instance, in Virginia Woolfs Mrs. Dalloway, the Peter Walsh walks past a couple in the midst of an argument. In his inner dialogue, he immediately makes a judgment
based on their age, "And that is being young" he thinks as he passes them (106). This begins a train of thoughts that lasts throughout what must have been
a fairly long walk. He begins by thinking about the couple, how inappropriate it is to be having a discussion in public so early in the morning.
He wonders what the scene had been about, what the man had been saying that the woman would look so desperate. He thinks they must have gotten into some
