Hewlett-Packard company existed long before computers became ubiquitous; it had been in business many years when it introduced its first PC in the early 1980s. Its PC business has
struggled for years, and it relied on its printers as the industry sorted itself out. The company has had difficulties in recent years, but it appears to be positioning
itself for better days in the future. HP Corporate, Business and Functional Strategy Mark V. Hurd replaced Carly Fiorina as CEO in 2005,
and has spent much of the ensuing time leading the company through recovery rather than into sweeping change (Burrows, 2005). Hurds focus for his first several months was on
calming the company internally and revisiting the old "what business are we in?" question. "In many ways, its a lot like the old, pre-Fiorina HP. Hurds most sweeping
initiative is to rebuild the culture of accountability that once made HP one of techs most consistent performers" (Burrows, 2005; p. 83). HP Competitive Advantage and Sustaining It
