BJs had several options before it, but it could make decisions using only the conditions and situations it could identify. It also needed to decide where it wanted to
be in the next several years, because that decision affects all that come after it. Another lesson is that those most involved in
strategy discussions need to ensure that they have defined the meaning of the terms they use. All sought growth for the long term, but all defined it differently.
The simulation itself rejects the goal of increasing profitability from 28 to 38 percent, choosing instead to pursue a goal that may or may not be sustainable. The simulation
recommended that BJs pursue the goal of leading its industry in terms of revenue. Though achieving revenues at that level could be quite gratifying, if it is done at
the cost of profitability, then it may not be able to achieve the same results in the following year. If the company increases profitability, it should be better prepared
to face industry or consumer changes in subsequent years. Concepts and Tools Made Available Matched Pair Analysis is a technique very often used
in medical and biological research (Berry and Mielke, 1996), but according to a search at Google and Gale Groups InfoTrac is not frequently used in conjunction with the SWOT.
Use of the technique for the purpose of completing the simulation reveals its usefulness in revealing options that are not readily apparent from review of SWOT items alone. Combining
and comparing SWOT items or weighing one in terms of another can produce strategic options that otherwise could remain hidden from view. Revealed Challenges
