"Michael Frenzel, chief executive of Tui, Europes largest travel group by sales, says he is taking seriously the threat of a hostile takeover bid". The article outlines how Morgan Stanley,
over a period of two days, has accumulated a total of 10% of the compnay shares. The company had been performing badly, and it is speculated the purchase has been
due to hedging, but the threat of acquisition due to the weakened share price and recent poor performances is still taken seriously. Whilst we are associating this with the
article regarding Tui, the recent potential acquisition of Abbey National by a Spanish bank may also be seen as anther potential consideration of merger and acquisition as a strategy.
For many companies a weak company is an opportunity, as acquisition and merger is a strategy used by many companies, sometimes adding value, but harder than is often envisaged. As
a compnay with a wide variety of interests this may be attractive to a number of companies looking for mergers and acquisitions. It can be argued it is due
to the search for cost advantage by way of economies of scale and scope as well as market share that lead many companies to peruse a company policy of mergers
or acquisitions. If we consider the search for an advantage by way of differentiation merger and acquisition can also be seen as a strategic tool.
