to spell the word and they had to learn what the word meant. In most instances, they also needed to know how to use the dictionary. We have been faced
with challenges to this method of developing vocabulary so what is the best way to teach it? According to different authors, "The research indicates students must be taught directly by
explicitly teaching words" (ITRC, 2004). This essay presents a number of strategies that have been found to be successful in teaching students vocabulary. Masur and Zion (2005). suggest teaching
fewer words but with more depth. They also suggest teaching students the different definitions of the same word and to teach words that are meaningful, meaning students will encounter the
words frequently (Masur and Zion, 2005). Ellis and Farmer (2004) also commented on this issue: "we need to teach considerably fewer terms, and invest considerable more time in developing deep
knowledge structures of those that are really essential for students to know." While teaching words explicitly and directly may be the best way, teachers do not always have the time
in class to do that with every word. Therefore, students need to learn how to use the dictionary, thesaurus and other reference books (Partnership for Reading, 2001). Teachers also need
to teach students how to recognize parts of words, like the base words, suffixes and prefixes and then to find clues for the meaning of a word in its context
