work with individuals on a specific issue, such as obesity or HIV/AIDS. Stephen Berg-Smith (2003), for instance, has been a health counselor since 1985. During these years, he has
designed behavior change programs, coached adolescents, coordinated substance abuse programs for schools, and taught yoga, among other things. This practitioner believes the most important thing for health counselors to be
knowledgeable of is motivation: the most effective catalysts of health behavior change are professionals who are well-versed in motivation-enhancing counseling skills and strategies" (Berg-Smith, 2003). Given this background, health
counselors are in a much better position to participate in effective health counseling situations. Motivation is truly at the root of everything we all do. When a health counselor knows
about and understands motivational theories, he or she can more effectively counsel their client through whatever situation is facing them. A booklet form the American Medical Association offers effective
strategies for counseling persons who are obese (Kushner, 2003). As we all know, obesity is a serious and prevalent health issue in the United States, and it is a very
difficult illness to overcome. Although this booklet is written for physicians, any health care professional could use the strategies effectively. These strategies include: * Communicate empathically. Notice the word "empathically,"
not empathetically, there is a huge difference. This requires the use of active listening, which is focused on nonverbal messages that tell the patient the counselor is interested in what
