Each manager is trying to gain an understanding of what the whole concepts of strategic planning and strategy are and each is grabbing hold of one part and trying to understand it from that part (Mintzberg and Lampel, 1999), hence, the parallel to the blind men trying to determine what the elephant was by touching one part of it. While there may not be a consensus on what strategic planning is and on what it is founded, there are schools of thought regarding strategy making (Mintzberg and Lampel, 1999). Mintzberg and Lampel offered several schools of strategy making and strategy, three of which are described here: * Learning School: An Emergent Process. The learning school grew to great proportions and successfully competed with the schools with a more prescriptive perspective (Mintzberg and Lampel, 1999). Adherents to this theory believe that "strategies are emergent, strategists can be found throughout the organization, and so-called formulation and implementation intertwine" (Mintzberg and Lampel, 1999, p. 12). * Design School: A Process of Conception. The design school is viewed as the original school of thought regarding strategy. This school promotes the notion that strategy formation is achieving the proper fit between the internal strengths and weaknesses and the external opportunities and threats (Mintzberg and Lampel, 1999). The SWOT process is used to perform this kind of analysis. In this school, senior managers formulate strategies that are simple enough for everyone to implement (Mintzberg and Lampel, 1999). These strategies do not emerge exclusively through intuitive thinking or exclusively from analytical thinking (Mintzberg and Lampel, 1999).
