Though new leadership and new strategic missions have been introduced since that time, care must be taken to ensure that the leadership focus does not embrace some of the same mistakes that occurred prior to the Columbia disaster. Specifically, the call for performance-based activities, lack of communication between different departments, and unflinchingly rigorous deadlines led to mistakes in leadership judgment. Recognizing these issues may in fact change the approaches to applying Bushs strategic planning for the future NASA missions, and subsequently address some of the problems that led to failures in the past. In 2004, President Bush announced a new vision for space exploration, in which he maintained the importance of a focus on the moon as a starting point for missions into space (Anonymous para. 2). Described as the "new course for Americas space program", Bush argued that the development of clear objectives for the future and a specific timeline for the plan would have productive results (Anonymous para. 4). The plan included both technology-based and human developments that would enhance our capacity for exploring the cosmos, including both robotic and manned space exploration (Anonymous).
