planning is the pre-implementation component of the process of strategic management that is so necessary to todays organizations. Competition in business has never been more intense, and the level
of intensity only increases. Time has shortened as the world has shrunk in size, virtually eliminating any luxury of misstep that may have existed in the past. In
todays business environment, it is necessary to identify opportunities, plan how to best take advantage of them and then implement those plans. Strategic Thinking
Lesson 1. One of the givens in todays business environment is that change will occur. Acceptance of this attitude was difficult in past years, when a question
of why something was done the way it was likely would be met with the mindless response of "Because weve always done it that way." This response can be
found today as well, but most likely not in the most successful organizations. Lesson 2. Embrace change. James Champy (1998) of
reengineering fame promoted rapid organization-wide change, effectively "blowing up" existing processes and plans in favor of designing and implementing totally new systems. Some organizations have taken this approach, and
