The transcendental movement more broadly describes the "religious and spiritual movement of protest and revival," which has been a consistent influence on American "literature and society," especially through Emersons work, since that time (Foner and Garraty). Comptons Encyclopedia describes New Englands transcendentalists as subscribing to the same principles, which included "beliefs in the essential unity of creation, the goodness of humanity, and the supremacy of insight over logic and reason." Rather than simply accepting the dictates of authority, transcendentalists emphasized the integrity of the individual, which included exercising ones own spiritual and moral strength. These precepts of transcendentalism can be seen in the work of both Louisa May Alcott (daughter of Amos Bronson Alcott) and Harriet Beecher Stowe, who were both products of the New England transcendentalist literary culture. Examination of Alcotts Little Women and Stowes Uncle Toms Cabin demonstrates that the influence that the transcendental philosophy had on the characterization, themes and plot lines of both novels. Alcott Raised within the transcendentalist community around Concord, Massachusetts--Emerson and Thoreau were friends of the family -- it is not surprising that Alcott incorporated transcendental ideas into her most famous work, which describes the early life of the March sisters, Meg, Jo, Amy and Beth. Examination of this text reveals that, in particular, Alcott stressed the transcendental perspective on individuality and the need to be genuine or true to oneself. In conjunction with this, one also sees the influence of transcendentalism in the emphasis that Alcott places on inner reflection and inner spirituality.
