be further from the truth. This paper examines Ghost dancing by Anna Linzer and House made of dawn by N. Scott Momaday to see how these different Native authors tell their stories. Discussion We want to analyze the aims, nature, practice and effects of the stories that the authors tell, and to do that well look at three examples from each book. Lets start with Ghost dancing, simply because its easier. The book is the story of Jimmy One Rock and Mary, his wife; it traces their lives and the changes in their world through a series of short stories. The stories are obviously interconnected, with Jimmy and Mary at their center, but they could stand alone. The first story in the book, Ghost dancing, is an introduction to Jimmy One Rock and his brothers, Chuckie and Roy. It takes the form of a flashback, or rather a vision or hallucination, but the reader doesnt realize that until the end, when Jimmy woke and found "Chuckies arms and legs and dirty bare feet ... all twisted in his own where they lay on the ceiling of the 62 Impala" (Linzer, 1998, p. 9). The three have gotten drunk, been in an accident and rolled the car, which may be why Jimmy thinks back to his childhood. At any rate, it is a startling introduction to life as Jimmy and other Indians live it. It also introduces another theme that pervades both books: alcoholism. All three brothers have trouble with it and Abel, the protagonist of Momadays book, is an alcoholic. Alcohol is a serious problem for Native peoples, and it plays a huge part in these stories.
