the establishment of an oral tradition through folktales and gospel work songs that the slaves could connect with their heritage. In her fiction, Toni Morrison probes the significance of
storytelling as it is transferred from mother to daughter. She also examines how redefining spirituality equipped African-American women to successfully handle constant adversity and oppression long after the Emancipation
Proclamation of 1863 theoretically liberated the slave. In her mystical stream-of-consciousness novel, Beloved, Morrison depicts the slave experience through the perspectives of three generations of African-American women. The
protagonist Sethe is haunted by the daughter (named Beloved) she killed to spare her the agony of slavery and inspired by her mother-in-law, freed slave Baby Suggs. It was the
year 1873 in Cincinnati, Ohio, 124 Bluestone Road to be exact. The relationship between mortal mother and ghostly daughter was established and reinforced through stories. Perhaps Beloved felt
the maternal and cultural connection she had been denied by her premature death. Despite the anguish of her oppressed past, ""Sethe learned the profound satisfaction Beloved got from storytelling.
It amazed Sethe (as much as it pleased Beloved) because every mention of her past life hurt. Everything in it was painful or lost" (69). Beloved wants
to hear about the diamond earrings that Mrs. Garner gave Sethe to mark her marital union that had been denied the ceremony it deserved. She also longs to know
details about the life of a slave daughter that existence death had spared her. These stories nourished Beloveds spirit that was hungry for details of her origins so that
she could better understand the circumstances that dictated her demise. But for Sethe, these stories reopened old wounds because they represented what had been lost not only by her
