relationships, in the sense that both present what might be thought as a normal human relationships as a means of trapping and confining individuals against their will. In Story of
an Hour, for example, it is evident that Louise has always viewed her marriage as a cage, and despite her loyalty to her husband, the relief and joy she feels
at her impending freedom far outweighs any affected she might have had for Brently. It is not that he has treated her cruelly - she acknowledges that he has been,
in the eyes of society, a good husband, and as Howard (2003) points out, accepts that when she sees his dead body she will feel grief. However, now that she
has a genuine basis for comparison between marriage and widowhood, she sees the former as a trap or a cage and the latter as offering infinite possibilities. In her mind,
it matters not whether Brentlys constraining of her freedom was meant kindly or otherwise, the end result is the same. Now that he is gone, she will be able to
live her life as she chooses and this is far more important to her than any grief she might feel at her husbands untimely demise.
A slightly different perspective on family life is offered in Joyces Eveline. Here, the protagonist is not only
well aware that she is trapped in a family structure where she has responsibility for others and no freedom for herself, she also has the opportunity to escape from all
