increased use of technology and the apparent improving abilities of artificial intelligence. The subject of the film A.I. directed by Stephen Spielberg, is about artificial intelligence. The main character,
a small boy called David is a form of artificial intelligence. David, to all appearances, looks like a small boy, acts like one and appears to have the emotions of
a child. David is a prototype that is brought home by his father Henry, after an accident places his parents real child
into a long term coma, from which he may not recover. The role of the artificial life form is to take the place of a child, to provide an object
for love and affection and respond in the same was a real child would respond. To an outsider he looks real, appearing about eleven years old, with brown hair and
weighting in at 60 pounds, his physical presence is real, and so is the love that he feels. However, as an android there is a real dilemma regarding his status
as a sentient life form. The determination of Davids status as a conscious being is difficult. It appears that he is able
to emulate a real boy, he makes decisions regarding his own actions, has emotions and acts independently. However, the actions and reactions are all the result of programming, even complex
programming. His love is only present after his mother, Monica, triggers it, his actions are determined by his programming and as such may not be seen as truly conscious acts.
