discusses Ballmers leadership style today as compared with that described by Alex Taylor in his piece of Ford Motor Co CEO Alan Mulally. Discussion The one thing the two men
share in common is a vision for their company. They know where they want the company to go and they have definite plans on how to get it there. This
differs greatly from those people who set goals such as "I want my company to succeed." Instead, while its clear they both want their organizations to be successful, they have
written down the philosophies that will guide them, and they know what has to be done at what point in time to bring the desired result. According to Taylor,
Fords Mulally "has devised a plan that identifies specific goals for the company, created a process that moves it toward those goals, and installed a system to make sure it
gets there" (Taylor, 2009, p. 44). Furthermore, Mulally watches carefully to make sure that things are moving as he wants them to, and he demands "weekly, sometimes daily, updates (Taylor,
2009, p. 44). He rejects vague statements like "Were going to work our way through it" in favor of looking at reality and deciding what to do about it (Taylor,
2009, p. 44). Mulally has made some risky moves, such as increasing the companys debt in order to have cash available to weather the recession; importing small cars from
Europe to sell in the United States; and selling off Land Rover and Jaguar (Taylor, 2009). He has also begun the process of selling off Volvo (Taylor, 2009). In addition
