some of the more common steroids, what theyre called, how theyre used, how they function; the risks/side effects and benefits of the drug and recommendations for or against their use.
Discussion Athletes who want to build mass and strength often use anabolic steroids. These substances are "derived from cholesterol" but are chemical, not natural (Freudenrich, 2006). The body has "several
major steroid hormones - cortisol and testosterone in the male, estrogen and progesterone in the female. Catabolic steroids break down tissue, and anabolic steroids build up tissue. Anabolic steroids build
muscle and bone mass primarily by stimulating the muscle and bone cells to make new protein" (Freudenrich, 2006). Athletes use these steroids because they encourage the growth of new muscles,
thus increasing muscle strength (Freudenrich, 2006). These steroids are mostly the male sex hormone testosterone and its derivatives; examples of anabolic steroids are: "testosterone, Dihydrotestosterone, Androstenedione (Andro), Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), Clostebol
and Nandrolone" (Freudenrich, 2006). They can be taken as pills or injected, depending on the users preference (Freudenrich, 2006). Steroids have well know and sometimes dangerous side effects. These effects
include liver damage and jaundice, because the steroids are "normally broken down in the liver" (Freudenrich, 2006). They can also cause "mood swings, depression and aggression" because of their effect
