a very serious concern and one that causes a great deal of argument in our society. However, when it comes to conditions such as child abuse it may well be
the only answer to a part of the problem. While social workers and therapy can play a part in altering the behavior of child abusers, many argue that this alone
does not stop child abuse and as such sterilization is necessary to protect further generations of children from suffering at the hands of an abusive individual. The following paper examines
the sides of the controversy and primarily argues that involuntary sterilization should clearly be an option. Sterilization of Child Abusers In looking at the issue one author notes
one side of the controversy stating, that the government inflicts "cruel and unusual forms of punishment such as forced sterilization for alleged child abusers (an unusual sentence that disproportionately affects
young women of color)" (Kelley, 2006). This is a very important reality to acknowledge for many times the policies of the nation affect impoverished and minority individuals. In this case
it is likely that impoverished women of color are perhaps more likely to engage in child abuse, but only because the policies of the society have made life very hard
for them in many respects. This is something to consider when arguing for involuntary sterilization of child abusers. In the same vein is the topic of utilizing sterilization and
Norplant as it relates to minority women: "The development of Norplant has given the judiciary and legislature the ability to control the reproductive choice of poor minority women" (Ludwig, 2006).
In many cases it appears as though judges are passing down lighter sentences to child abusers, women, if they volunteer to have a Norplant implant or a form of sterilization
