present because the shows writers cannot develop the characters and so they must rely on specific prototypes. There is simply no time, and so, characters appear to be stereotyped in
order to create an atmosphere that the audience will accept. It lends a sense of authenticity. While to an extent, stereotypes are based on truth, stereotypes perhaps refer to
a sector of a community and not the whole community. What happens in reality is that people in the midwest will watch The Sopranos or re-runs of Happy Days and
see Italian people as larger than life, loud, virile and rather low class. Laurino (2000) comments: "Theres little room for educated, middle-class Italian-Americans who might not conform to the prevailing
stereotypes" (p. 31). And while it is true that ethnic groups, as well as racial ones will be stereotyped a great deal, HBOs Sex and the City stereotypes the WASP
in the series own Charlotte. There are episodes where Charlotte says something to the effect that "we dont scream. Were WASPs" and the entire clan is characterized as wealthy, stuffed
shirts. This proves that not only are minorities the subject of stereotyping, but even the majority does not escape televisions wrath. The days are long gone when the master was
white and the slave was black, but the masters are being seen as elite and Sex and the City is not the only show to project this image. Another example
