Issues pertaining to class are generally shoved to the side and ignored as Americans subscribe to the fiction that the United States is a classless society. However, within the complex morass of characteristics that make up American culture, the ideas that people have about race and class intertwine and manifest themselves in racial and ethnic stereotypes. Examination of this social phenomena suggests that race is not solely the central issue to America’s social ills but that class also plays a pivotal role, as the two are inextricably mixed. First of all, a demographic examination of American incomes shows huge discrepancies between the highest income brackets and the lowest and this translates into huge differences in background, education
and job opportunities. For the most part, the wealthy are European-descended whites and the lower-class consists of primarily Blacks and Hispanics. But while class most certainly exists, it is political
correct only to indicate the middle class (Mantsios 590). It is also true that while Blacks can rise to prominence and affluence, even wealthy blacks are still "subjected to racial
slurs" and other forms of racism on occasion (Mantsios 605). This fact would tend to verify race is the central problem of the culture, but it is also true that
the continued existence of racism also has an effect on the African Americans, and this effect is to make them highly aware of racial identity and stereotypes. For example,
while African American author Shelby Steele feels drawn to his racial identity, he realizes that his outlook and worldview is shaped by his middle class roots and upbringing. These two
