Racial stereotypes are both unreasonable and erroneous, with such predisposed opinions about certain groups of individuals very difficult to purge from the publics mind. For example, African-Americans are often associated with being lazy troublemakers who have no moral judgment. Because a majority of crimes are committed by black males, society looks upon these specific people as unacceptable members whose agenda is to wreak havoc upon the community. Never mind the fact that Caucasians, Asians and Latinos commit a significant number of crimes, as well: society is riveted on the stereotype of blacks causing the most social problems. Todays African-American gangs do not reflect the same romantic aura of those in the 1930s where it was almost an honor to be associated with one. The stereotype that has transpired asserts that every black adolescent male belongs to a gang and that the only reason for these groups to exist is to enact gratuitous murder. Moreover, all blacks are drug addicts, deal drugs and live in the ghetto, an equation that causes them to continually perpetuate the plight of the black population. People who have no idea the diversity of the African-American are quick to blindly follow what the mass media clearly intend to convey. The mass media are a particularly effective avenue for perpetuating the cause and effect of stereotype toward the black population.
