established Kings reign as the king of horror, but it is his ability to build suspense that is the true genius behind this masterpiece. No aspect of this story
is left unattended by Kings methodology, as he has imbued elements of suspense into the setting, the characters, the plot, symbolism, and more. Furthermore, an examination of Kings life
reveals that the suspense evident in his writing is founded in the whirlwind reality of Kings personal experience. The Shining
is the story of the Torrance family who is completely isolated at the Overlook Hotel in Colorado. Jack, the father, is a recovering alcoholic who is trying to mend
his ways, but clearly has many inner demons to contend with. He is hoping this temporary job will help him resolve some of his personal issues and reconnect with
his family. The suspense and terror ignite with the realization that Jacks son Danny has "the shine", which is a gift that enables him to know things he couldnt
possible know on his own. The Overlook is a place of many spirits and they want Dannys gift for themselves. Eventually the Overlook is able make Jack so
demented that he becomes a vessel for their agenda. Beginning with the setting, King has executed a masterful scene of suspense. He
begins the story by introducing what would seem to be a peaceful, secluded retreat. While it seems a bit eerie that the family would be so utterly alone in
