or not the CFR is quite as innocent as it claims, there is no doubt that it is very influential and that some of the ideas its members produce are
worth considering. This paper discusses Flynns book The Edge of Disaster. Discussion Flynn begins his book with a sensational hypothetical example of what might be a scenario for the next
terrorist attack on U.S. soil, involving blowing up a gasoline tanker inside a refinery, thus causing a massive explosion and release of poison gas (Flynn, 2007). Flynn discusses things we
have all become aware of since 9/11, namely, how easy it is for people who wish us harm to enter the United States. Flynn says simply that despite the horror
of 9/11 and the disasters of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and "some new federal spending on homeland security, America remains dangerously unprepared to prevent and respond to acts of catastrophic
terrorism on U.S. soil" (Flynn, 2007, p. xvii). Flynn notes that one of the most important resources that the government could use in the effort to make the nation
more secure is the private sector, but it has not done so (2007). Instead, the government has taken the issue of security entirely to itself, and, Flynn argues, hasnt done
a particularly good job of it (2007). As proof, he cites the fact that the only measures that have been taken involve air travel (and succeed only in annoying travelers);
