a small boat, trying to survive after their ship wrecked. It is the story of their relationships and a story of the futility of mans struggles in the face of
nature. The following paper summarizes and analyzes Stephen Cranes short story. Open Boat As mentioned, this story is about several men who are at sea on a small
boat because their ship sank. As such they are clearly at the mercy of nature and can only hope and pray to be rescued or to find land before they
die. In this story we do not have the tale of the sinking, in terms of events happening, but rather the setting is primarily only that which involves the life
boat they are on. The story itself has several different events that take place while the men are on the boat. In the beginning there is something of a
storm and this puts the reader right into the dangerous setting that the men are within. "These waves were of the hue of slate, save for the tops, which were
of foaming white, and all of the men knew the colors of the sea" (Crane). We see the sea settle, gulls land in the water, and the men row
the tiny little life boat. At one point they believe they see land in the distance, and then they realize it is land. However the wind comes along and moves
them further out to sea away from the lighthouse they have spotted. Then they find themselves within sight of shore again and there is a person on shore waving at
them. This figure is joined by other figures and the men in the boat do not understand why they are not taking their boat out to get them, to save
