of the miracles of modern medicine. Unfortunately, there are many more in dire need of organs than there are organs to address those needs. Watching a loved one
die when they could have been saved if only an organ had become available is a painful process. It is also a process that gives one a different perspective
on such things as cloning. As my uncle lie in bed during the last few weeks of his life he drifted in and
out of consciousness. He was attached to a machine that delivered pain killer on demand. At first my uncle had been hesitate in using the machine. He
only did so when the pain became unbearable. Over time, however, he became less uncertain and more committed to keeping his pain as much in check as possible.
Over time, the amount that was delivered with each push of the button increased. Fortunately, my uncles doctor recognized that my
uncle was, in effect, in palliative care. Consequently, my uncles increased demand for pain medicine was answered without question. Even though the use of morphine in these amounts
would ultimately result in my uncles death, in reality there were few other options than death. My uncle was in dire need of a kidney but so were countless
other individuals around the nation (Robertson, 2005). These individuals only hope for life rested on someone else losing their life.
